In the past I have always looked at their own social media accounts. How do they stack up? Who follows them? How's engagement? In my books, you got to be walking the walk.
"Qualified candidates should readily share with you a list of existing and past clients." Only if their clients didn't make them sign NDAs, which is unlikely...
Seems like a pretty basic list. I think the most important question is re: ROI. Make sure they're performance-based and not focused on vanity metrics.
