They are not timeless but they still work. Sooner or later Google will root out all artificial link building techniques and only accept truly organic links.
Timeless in the sense that they are "earned" links, not simply something that can be "built", and not something worthy of any future Google penalization. Sure, they may be devalued over time, as they move to a less link oriented algorithm, however for the time being and beyond, these techniques can only help. I see where you are coming from though.
