You don't build relationships by email newsletters, be it double opt-in or not. Email newsletters are a broadcasting technique. Relationships are built by personal one to one outreach done by real people.
I mostly agree with this, but there are cases where it builds relationships, e.g. Fred Wilson, Brad Feld, Chris Dixon, Dan Zarrella's personal blogs all have subscriptions that make you feel like you've got a personal relationship with them. If it's a consistent individual sharing transparently and not marketing to you, it can work well. I'm trying to convince Geraldine to do this for Everywhereist, as I think it could achieve precisely that.

True, although there's no reason that email newsletters can't be used to start one on one conversations. Such as asking people's opinions and providing a real person's email address who can have those discussions.
