Frederik Trovatten (@Trovatten) suggested I add a list of FAQs at the end; what do you think? If so, let's try and create the list here (give both Q & A), and I'll add as the list grows. Remember: try and keep it as dumbed down as possible, as this is supposed to appeal to the average uncle.

Actually the FAQ is just as much for users as it is for Google to capture long tail queries your infographic could answer ;)

Does that mean you can fix my computer?

I've actually received this question on multiple occasions. And although the answer is yes for me I think there's a common misconception that SEOs are automatically able to do everything that involves computers - even IT supprt

"Why shouldn't I just click on the ads at the top?"

"How does the search engine know what a website says?"

"How does google determine which site to put at the top?"

(BTW, all 100% true questions from my parents when I told them about my job for the first time. they are not the most technically-savvy but I love them anyway.)

These are awesome Jen! Especially love the middle one - would be easy enough to just point to this: http://www.google.com/insidesearch/howsearchworks/thestory/

I have also run into the misconception that click volume directly impacts search rankings, i.e. "Hey everyone please search for my company name on Google and then click the link to our website so we can rank #1"

Do you know that click data doesn't impact rankings?

Do you have any sources to back up some of the stats at the bottom? Particularly the 70% click on organic and 75% never see the second page? Not questioning them just wondering.

  • Jon Cooper   Mar 13 2013   Flag

You're right, need to go back and find where I find those stats. Terrible on my part. I'll try and update soon with them.

    Hey Jon,

    I was thinking questions like:
    1. Does Adwords affect the organic results?
    2. What's the difference between organic and paid search results?

This is the best explanation of SEO I've seen so far. Awesome articulation.

Nice post Jon. PDF download and embed options (I know it's not an infographic, but it's close) are all that's missing.

Also: sell it as a poster version? Would have to be a bloody big poster, mind you...

  • Kati Grega @ IMA Interactive   Mar 13 2013   Flag

It's really nice. It would be even nicer if there were pinnable images. :)

  • Jon Cooper   Mar 13 2013   Flag

This is why I love Inbound - I can post a fun little project and find out that I probably ruined myself by not adding things like a list of FAQs, misconceptions, adding pin options to the images, and making it downloadable, all things that are quick and easy to add, but can severely limit its success. Helps me make sure I do this the first time around in the future, whether it's for a client or not.

Favorite misconception/question from a SMB: "How do you optimize a search engine?"

Talking about misconceptions...how about when they misunderstand your explanation and introduce you as the "Guy who works at Google?"

  • William Smith   Mar 14 2013   Flag

Really nice guys. I sent this around to quite a few clients this morning ;)

  • John Mardlin   Mar 14 2013   Flag

Nice job! What did you use to create the images and where can I learn to do so?

  • Jon Cooper   Mar 14 2013   Flag

    Illustrator/designer created them.
