Hi everyone! Thanks so much for your participation in Inbound.org. It's been amazing to see this community grow and thrive and surface amazing stuff even when Dharmesh and I can't personally contribute. Your dedication and passion has made Inbound.org one of the best sites in the marketing world (IMO), and it's a wonderful thing to behold (even the spam is surprisingly low!). Some stats (via Casey): Of 5,180 approved post: 2,986 posts have more than 1 up vote. 1,054 posts have 5 or more up votes. Of 3,581 users 2,127 users have cast an up vote. 816 users have submitted one article 81 users have submitted 10 or more articles This April, Casey, Dharmesh and I have a bit more bandwidth to devote to new features, fixes and upgrades to the site and we'd love your suggestions about what you want to see. Please leave comments below, upvote the comment suggestions you like and we'll create a prioritization for addressable items (note that not everything might get done depending on difficulty, but we'll put in a best effort for sure). Thanks again - look forward to your feedback!
A clear explanation of what and what does not build karma. And what karma does for a user (if anything beyond bragging rights). And thanks for this great resource. Now essential daily reading for me!
I'm not sure I'd want to know, then people will start spamming the system.
As we say here in the UK "Here's one I made earlier" http://stokedseo.co.uk/2012/02/11/my-inbound-org-wish-list/ Loving the project so far Rand, excellent work ny all involved
I'd like to see the following: * A less busy RSS feed for just the best content. * A StumbleUpon type IFrame for letting me click through to an article to read it, rate it, and then easily move on to the next article in my search/feed.
Great news, 1. The ability to remove an upvote - I often use my iPhone/iPad and with my Homer Simpson-esque fat fingers I have hit the upvote button when I didn't mean to :) 2. Offer more Karma for comments - I really feel the community engagement on Inbound is missing something. I think offering more karma points for comments or perhaps if there was a way a moderator was able to give out bonus karma (as you do on Moz?) to great contributions.
Certainly agree re karma for comments. I'd also like to see karma not counting your own upvote for submitting as that's open to abuse. A person submitting 100 junk articles should not get more karma than somebody submitting 1 or 2 which are quality
^^ This!
We already mostly control for this through the "flag" system (which removes the value of submitting lots of junk, and we ban accounts that do this, too). I like karma counting self-votes that are deemed worthy, particularly in small communities like this, where it would otherwise be hard to grow karma quickly (also technically encourages comments).
Just another thought but could we have a "submission of the month" or "contributor of the month" type of reward system. There are lots of great companies who I'm sure would be willing to donate free software trials etc. & again may help to encourage a few lurkers to participate more??
I like the "contributor of the month" idea; good call!
1) ability to load the blog post within inbound.org without going to the page, or 2) a screenshot of the submitted page 3) able to view the youtube video on the entry page 4) able to reassign category 5) able to delete own submission
A list of all the articles I've upvoted
You should already have this, click on your name from the homepage and it takes you to your profile. From there you can see all articles and comments
All you can see are the articles you've commented on or submitted. I think being able to see what you've up voted would be a nice feature.
for sure
As a long time HN reader I added my first comment then returned to see if there were any replies a la the threads link at the top of HN and was unable to determine how to do this. I'd suggest making it more obvious and a single click from the home page. Personally I havent participated since then because I thought it wasnt possible and it makes commenting far less meaningful
This is an easy one to add that I'll be doing in the next few days. Thanks for suggesting it!
Awesome! thanks
That would be great :)
Rel=author data of submitted post author (if available) Enhanced rating system to determine at-a-glance if a submission 1) is actionable or just a rank (as good as it might be) 2) is a video, infographic, image or text 3) has downloads or associated tools
And the ability to edit my comments within a time frame: 1) ... just a "rant" :)
Hi Rand, First of all I congratulate Dharmesh and yourself for the great success of inbound.org, I started using the site not long ago, and I must add my 2 cents from my past experience with bookmarking sites. The only things I see is missing are: - A navigation with list of categories for fast reach particular topics. - A way to add share button to blogs and sites. (plugin or JS) Rather than that, I absolutely recommend to keep the site simple as it is. The site looks great, and works just fine! P.S. More functionality means more headaches as this type of sites grows so quick, I am afraid maintaining the site will be so hard at some point or when server problem happens! So, I just want to be honest, leave it the way it is unless you really can't avoid some feedback :)
Steven Welder created a button you can embed on your site http://www.searcherize.com/add-a-submit-to-inbound-org-button-to-your-website/
If you click "archives" there's a list of all topics and all items sorted by upvotes. That said, maybe we need to make that link more clear and descriptive. Button for sharing is, absolutely, top on the priorities list right now.
A "+1"/vote button you can embed on your blog (next to Like and Tweet buttons)
Hi Steven Welder, created an unofficial Inbound button http://www.searcherize.com/add-a-submit-to-inbound-org-button-to-your-website/ or you can use shareaholic.
Hi Rand maybe if it could be like read it later where the articles were already drawn into inbound.org and if you wish you could go to the article website itself, otherwise stay on inbound.org and read it with the inbound reader which will optimise the text and article so its easier to read especially on tabbed devices as well.
Hello Rand, some desirable features would be: 1. Ability to edit the post title or category after you have shared it 2. Ability to add a description along with your post when you share it 3. Ability to eliminate the "vote" of a post -in case you've mistakenly voted it 4. Ability to easily share a post also in social networks (a Google +1, FB Like or Tweet this button in each post) Thanks :)
I agree with most of these although some people may use the ability to change titles in a manipulative way.
Yes, as almost with any of the "editable" features, nonetheless, it's something needed -sometimes you realize there is a mistake in the title after is published-. Maybe an option would be to have a preview before is "finally" published or have an amount of time to do it before is definitive.
Agreed - this is a harder feature to build (due to how Wordpress/Twitter login system works right now), but I'd like to have it.
- The option to add a comment right when you submit the post. Would definitely help get discussion going. -- Then the option to tweet "I just submitted ____ on Inbound and started a discussion" (or something). -- Perhaps a tweet button on each discussion page. - When you submit a post, have the 'incoming' page automatically refresh to include the post you just submitted. -Dan
+1 - Yes, definitely submitting a summary or initial comment to get the ball rolling at the time of adding a story.

Rand, Dharmesh, and Casey - great site and I really like the way you've iterated/are iterating on the minimum viable product concept. 3,500+ users with 5000+ posts since the beginning of the year seems like a pretty awesome accomplishment, given that Q1 just ended. Cheers! Here's what I'd add: - eCommerce section. :) - Incentivation of comments, like everyone else is saying. Not sure that points/karma/badges/etc. is the best way to do this. Wondering if status/visibility is a better way (e.g., commenter with most upvotes of the day is featured on the Inbound homepage or something with a link to the conversation that they contributed to). I also like they way this is handled on SEOmoz's own community: "nofollow" is removed from a link on your profile to your personal site. - Slides/presentations section - or maybe "conferences", since we tend to see a decent amount of posts during/after the major conferences in our industry. - Jobs section - I could see some potential for abuse here, but... this might also be a good monetization method (if you're looking for that). - Submission limits? I see spammers submitting several stories in a row. Maybe a limit of 1 submission/5 minutes might be enough to halt that? - Like someone else pointed out, different levels of RSS (e.g., stories with 5+, 10+, 20+ votes only) - I'm undecided on upvoter identity. I like the concept Gaz pointed out, that this would help me find/connect with more new folks. But then again, if they actually comment, I can do that more easily. Just like with your decision to exclude down-voting, identifying upvoters may create barriers to participation. Hmmmmm. It would be pretty ham-handed to require a comment per upvote. But what if you required a comment per every, say, five or ten upvotes? Many thanks again and congratulations on your success!
Thanks Jonathon, I'll be working to beef up the algo to detect spam better in the upcoming weeks. It's hard to figure out how people will abuse a site like this and I think we have a few use cases that we can plan for and stop.
Perhaps somehow detecting if the Twitter account has a certain threshold of activity. That one user I reported had created an account with no tweets, follows or followers, just for the the sake of posting something here.
I've always said the I would prefer to comment on the actual article, rather than the inbound thread, maybe others feel that way too? I know personally getting comments on my site is a real buzz and I wouldn't want to take that away from others who work hard on their content. It feels a little impolite to enter into discussion and add value here when the blogger allows comments directly on their site. ..maybe I'm old fashioned
Maybe an Inbound.org commenting service, something like Disqus, for websites so that whatever is discussed here also shows up on their page, and same goes the other way around. On a side note (though this may not be that significant), an updated profile whenever one changes his/her Twitter username. I changed mine a few weeks ago (for a unified online identity on different services), and it seems that my Inbound.org profile still shows my old username. Consequently, clicking on it brings up a non-existent page on Twitter.
1. Display a Tweet button adjacent to story. That's quick, easy & viralises more. 2. As above Add a G+ and maybe a LinkedIn Share, but don't flood it with ALL the social buttons. 3. Enable @inboundorg to Tweet Inbound comments out, it makes a more interesting feed and rewards community. 4. Display anonymous cluster intent: "People who voted for that, also voted up this [inbound URL]" - makes site more sticky site and strengthens internal linking! 5. Put a Chartbeat widget on show - give an indication to infrequent visitors the value of site. It's fun. 6. Discretely offer a email sign up of past week/month's hottest. Done with RSS to Email by Mailchimp it's a breeze. It's a welcome option for busy busy ppl. 7. Make Archive page more interesting by displaying hottest submission adjacent to each category.
Would you like the tweet button to tweet a link to the original article or to the Inbound article? I struggle to link just to the Inbound post as it seems like we could divert traffic from the original article.
I say tweet the original URL with attribution to Inbound, using "via @Inboundorg"
Option to mark articles to read later.
"Hall of Fame" If a submission gets X number of supposedly valid votes, it enters a hall of fame. From this, Inbound.org could curate premium content by category and become a one-stop resource for all internets learning. Would be brilliant for leading more folks into our industry eh? :)
A slimmer head design, with double click blue bar to jump to top and an infinite scroll.
I honestly have no idea how to address this, but IMO the biggest problem with Inbound.org is the SEO-centric community. On any given day 80-90% of the "hot" content is focused on advanced SEO. At this point in time, Inbound.org is a great place to discover new SEO content but I think the community would benefit from adding experts in other areas of internet marketing.
I've been toying with the idea of suggesting some foursquare type badges, to display on a users profile page and against the article themselves. I'm thinking along the lines of Chris's "top contributor" idea but also badges to show an article has been number one in the hot list, or number on in it's category. You could also add badges for number of comments, number of articles submitted ect. Also, subscribing to a thread to be notified of comments is something I'd like to see. I can't always get back to the site but would like to keep up with the discussion.
I’m fairly new to inbound.org so I have not had time to try out and evaluate all the current features. I love the clean, simple interface. However these are the things that come to mind when using inbound.org: How many clicks/views does each article have? Possibility to sort by upvotes, dates, category, etc. would be nice. Minor design feature: Highlight the icon for active page (HOT & INCOMING), not only on hover. // Tobias
1. Not everyone visits the Incoming page. Why not show 1-2 new links on the front page too? If a new link is shown to 10 people and no one votes for it, don't show it anymore. 2. An RSS feed with links having 5 or more upvotes only would be awesome.
A count on the profile page for amount of articles and comments. For example: Posted Articles (11) Posted Comments (22) // Tobias
The option to edit/delete comments would also be nice :-)
An option/notification to the user for 'why a post got removed' or the actual reason of violation of Terms of Use?
Tokenized email notifications (e.g. I can turn off emails on a per-post basis) when people comment on a post I created, respond to my comment on another post, or comment on a post that I also commented on. This would help retain and sustain engagement from the people doing the two highest-value actions on Inbound: those who create the content and the discussion around it.
Mentioned earlier "Ability to easily share a post also in social networks (a Google +1, FB Like or Tweet this button in each post)". Preferably a widget right next to the upvote button. Though many of the posts and sites themselves have this I'll often come back to inbound.org and then remember I didn't share from the post.
