Cut out the middleman. Google does not need you so make sure you don't need Google to survive. Many desperate business people approch after they got penalized, when it's already too late in some cases. You can't build a real audience over night. These busineses won't survive long enough to do so.
This was the type of advice that strategic-thinking internet marketers were doling out 5 (or even 10) years ago. Still true -- and if you haven't yet seen the light, it's not too late! Better late than never.
Google -does- need you to survive. They need the content creators, the thinkers, the folks who share information. Focus on creating a great experience for users, writing helpful information and of course, all the other things that Paddy mentioned in his post and you'll be fine.
