I think John really touched on something big with his first strategy - partnerships. Find companies, associations, and organizations that you know will give you a link as a byproduct of some deal, then go out and make that deal. Links as byproducts should be the focus of B2B.
This is exactly why effective content marketing separates the men from the boys. The boys don't take time to build the quality relationships needed for long term succes.

I have to agree. I think some of the strongest SEO efforts I am seeing are coming from companies who are using their offline partnerships and efforts to augment their online efforts. Or as Wil Reynolds put it...they're doing "Real Company Shit".
