Highly misguided advice, given the rising importance of social interactions to a page's Search performance. Any important SEO landing page should not only have social buttons on it but also be plastered with CTAs encouraging people to click them.
but there is a legitimate argument Matthew that an overdose of choice just adds bloat to the page (and the code) and the desired user intent is diluted. Most sites over offer social buttons. Excessively decorated pages are an eyesore.
Sure, improve the page design, layout & code. Make it load faster and look better. But only ditch the buttons if you don't care about social/search visibility.
I strongly agree with you. Also, websites should be better off using only social accounts where the majority of their target audience resides. I've seen some who've peppered their sidebars with "We're on blah3x, Let's be friends on la3x, etc." and went facepalm when I discovered they weren't being active at all on those social media sites.
