go to bed Rand :)
Interesting, but the graph is perhaps slightly misleading? Here's the original article: http://www.statista.com/topics/1001/google/chart/709/google-s-ad-revenue-since-2004/ which is quoted as saying;
"Given the fact that Google operates globally, the comparison is obviously unfair and shouldn’t be judged scientifically, but nonetheless it shows how big Google’s ad business really is and how small print advertising has become.
Note: We have been made aware of the fact that Google's revenue figures represent gross revenue, i.e. revenue before payments to publishers. According to Google, the company paid around $5 billion to publishers in the first six months of 2012."
Not to take away from the point that Google rakes in the cash ;-)
Google is an US corporation and newspapers or old media are also read globally. So the comparison is OK. In Germany local Google ad revenue is also more than all of the press together.
I still purchase the WSJ and NYTimes in print despite my digital subscriptions. I wouldn't want to take food out of the mouth of Rupert Murdoch and the like..
it's not google, it's the users, they using the web differently than 10 years ago...that's all, google is not authoritative in everything that 'news' when i want to read something that worth something i'll still go and read the news paper...
The graph as a whole is shrinking, could we also be seeing a push from Consumer Packaged Goods manufacturers away from advertising and into 'free' social media?
