commit: 6b2ca8a - #414 (2014-03-05 12:54:44 -0500)
don't they throttle you after a hundred or so follows? this guy followed 500-1000 people every single day, jesus.
Patrick, that's my post and it has nothing to do with me following other people. I had 500-1000 people *following me*. I never mass follow people (on any social network). Just wanted to clarify, since I'm not sure you understood that based on your comment.
My understanding is that Google+ limits you to following 5000 people until you yourself have more than 5000 followers. He was probably seeking out shared circles, mass following people, then dumping them a day or two later. I've done this on a smaller scale (experimentally of course) and the follow-back rate is actually pretty high on Google+. If he was consistently adding hundreds or thousands per day, it's not out of the question that he could gain that many followers in 4 months.
That makes sense. I agree the follow back rate is fairly high. I've followed a dozen or so people recently and am constantly getting follow back notifications. It's almost like "how I got 80k Twitter followers..." by following a ton of people. Next week: how I got 80k Facebook likes.
Brad, see my comment above to Patrick. I had 500-1000 people following me based on being added to the SUL. Not the other way around.
Typical In depth article.Going to follow the same. Thanks Buddy.
Make sure to be pro-Google and not controversial to get there.
Definitely not the case Tad (and we've had this conversation before).
So this guys "secret" is...he got put on the Suggested Users List? Yeah, very useful, since getting on that list is a capricious decision by the Google Gods, and you can't earn your way on it. There are plenty of people on the SULs who are atrocious at engaging on G+, and tons of very useful people who are ignored by it.
Is SUL determined by algorithm or users get hand picked by Google staff?
Since it stated that he was on the SUL for specifically for 'Technology', I would think it is curated.
The main SUL lists are hand curated by Google+
Oh Really? So you are referring to the G+ network wide lists that Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift are on, not "suggested people for Mark T." right?
It was my understanding that SUL's that I see every day are based algorithmically based on friends in common/employment/etc.
Yes, those are. I'm referring to the top level SUL's that are shown to new users as part of their sign up process. But there are algorithmic suggestions; the ones that show up in our streams every day.
Wow, after some of our conversations on G+, I was surprised to see this
comment from you Mark. Did you even read my post? I recommend going
back through it and then commenting. There's no secret... I've been
working my tail off on G+ since it launched. I was added to a SUL and
saw a dramatic increase in followers. And then I discuss the impact
(engagement-wise, SEO, etc.)
First off, I didn't realize it was your post. Didn't look at the author.
And yes, guilty, I did stop reading after I got to the SUL list. My snap judgment was that that negated the usefulness of the post to the average reader. A lot of very good people never get on the SUL.
Actually I got the algorithmic SUL boost around mid April too, when I was about 30k. It took me up to about 50K and then I was dropped off, along with others I know of. Like you I continued to do the same things as always during that time, and even though my daily growth is smaller that during my SUL time now, it is higher than before.
Anyway, I now read your whole post and give a hearty thumbs up and job wells done!
