commit: fb200d8 - #595 (2014-04-14 00:44:57 -0400)
Good post Joe. I wonder how many marketers actually realise their results may be being skewed by local and personalised search results.
This is out of date, isn't it? Your IP is still a factor (right?)
IP location is a major factor.
There are always going to be some factors that you can't really control that are going to have an impact and IP is one of them. I was just trying to suggest a way to get results as unbiased as possible. I guess if it was important enough to an individual, you could look into using proxies to get results based on different IP locations.
Thanks for your input!
^^ IP is huge. Devices (Laptop vs Desktop vs Mobile) also matter. Ranks are a signal, not a goal.
Very good point and I couldn't agree more Victor, rankings should no longer be a specified goal for an online marketing campaign as there are multiple online channels from which to generate sustainable revenue and/or lead generation, for example, active community participation and relationship building through social media.
Campaigns consisting of simple ranking goals are a very old school approach and in my mind in order to meet KPI's would see black hat techniques implemented. However, search does still play a big part in the make up of a fully integrated campaign and visibility in the SERP's is still important, although I do not condone selling clients specific ranking goals I would still like to be able to monitor various positions within result pages as an indication (to me) as to the success of the overall campaign.
Hopefully as the change in industry rolls out more and more will begin to recognise the importance of overall business goals and take these into consideration when planning a campaign.
Thanks for sharing it Joe. I agree with Tom! I have been doing keyword research analysis for some time, but never realized about the results. These are really good tips to follow.
IMHO you also have to delete cookies including Flash cookies your browser can not see so you need an extension for that and then you need to use a proxy. It's not worth the fuss often as users' rankings get localized and personalized as well so rather look at Google Webmaster Tools rankings to get an idea if you have to.
