I love stories like this and the people who inspire them. I'm learning XML right now and it's blowing my mind with how much more powerful and subtle it is compared to X/HTML. But the more important pieces here are that marketers and coders can work together, learn from each other, and don't need to sit in their individual silos. In fact, sometimes they can be the same person! :)
Hah, I fully agree, things like this inspire me so much (obviously being a marketer seeing another marketer create a billion dollar business) however mainly because I personally have so many ideas for apps that I would love to develop. I too am learning some different code languages etc. and hopefully will be able to create (and market) something of my very own sometime soon!
I have no aspirations to become a great coder, but I'd like to know the basics and theories so I can communicate better with the technical side. The article mentioned Codecademy as a learning tool; I have my sights set on http://www.teamtreehouse.com
