Thank you for posting this article. I think the main advice is that an exact match domain needs matching quality content that is useful to the users to back it up and maintain rank.
I would say they are not dead but their influence on rankings has drasticallly decreased and become only another ranking factor
I've heard (can't remember the source) that bing search still gives the exact match bonus. fwiw
