Do these links pass much pr? Most are usually a fair distance removed from say the index page of a site with high pr.
I would assume not. But you could always try and point some links towards those page as you go. Having a high ranking Google page/About.me page for your name couldn't hurt. That said, if you are spending time pointing links to other pages then why not point them straight to your own. Has to count for something.
I think the point is to grab the low hanging fruit. You won't rank solely because of these links, but knock these out, then move on to tougher/higher quality targets.
Hit the nail on the head. Beggars can't be choosers. Along with that, you are never, ever going to get the biggest and best links every time. Always think diversity. Even though these wouldn't be considered "strong" links, they come from quality domains.
