I don't get it. So "optimization" is a bad and misleading word because you used the wrong charts to visualize SEO techniques? So what do you want to say instead of optimization, marketing? Marketing means in layman-terms: selling stuff to people. If that isn't a limited and misleading view of SEO I don't know what is. IMHO, the optimization part is the only thing that makes actual sense in the SEO acronym these days as it's not just about search engines. You want to reach the optimum, that's why you optimize. To sell stuff to people you don't need to fix your site at all or spread the word, just buy some ads.
