I'm still not convinced that Pinterest is the next big thing. I see plenty of people pinning my images but nobody coming over to view the sources. Even other image bookmarking sites perform better. According to Google Trends Pinterest is already bigger than Tumblr in the US though: http://trends.google.com/websites?q=pinterest.com%2C+tumblr.com&geo=US&date=ytd&sort=0

Personally Pinterest is more like a game for me and my clients, as it is just starting to be known and used by early adopters here in Spain and Italy (in Italy especially). On the other hand, it would be interesting to see real usage data of the German clone, which is having a quite good reception in Europe being not needed an invitation to use it. If I would have to suggest it, then it would be for fashion/food/travel mostly, as these seems to be the most shared topics. Any of you USA based marketers have start to use it seriously? If so, may you share your impressions?

I haven't seen any businesses actually using pintrest yet, or anyone who isn't a marketer talking about it really. None of my non-marketing friends have heard of it. They sound like they've had big growth in the last few months, but it hasn't broken out yet even amongst the tech-saavy young people in Boston.

Most of the people I've spoken with about Pinterest are non-marketers. Does anyone have any good business case studies that show conversion?

I see my non-marketing friends posting about Pinterest on Facebook pretty regularly.

I think that pinterest traffic will have to be much larger to begin creating worthwhile conversions. Also I believe the pinterest could be the best, free, social remarketing tool for companies that could eventually tie into social search functions. You pin something to your board 2 months down the road its right in your face for a purchase remind. It's the first social shopping cart that is no pressure on the consumer. Not great for an agency but great for eventual sales.

Is anyone else getting sick of blatant falsehoods in titles of these articles? We go from "Pinterest Becomes Top Traffic Provider for Retailers" in the title to the end of the article claiming "becoming a top five referrer for several apparel retailers"

I first heard about Pinterest from a few creative folks I know. They have been using Pinterest to share interesting items like sketches, apparel and accessories. The site appears to be a way for people (mostly women) to show items that represent their lifestyle. I think this is where brands could fit in the mix. Brands that promote an entire lifestyle with their products could find their audience on Pinterest. One that comes to mind is Fossil. The other day I heard the phrase, "Fossil seems to represent you". I could see people finding lifestyle inspiration via Pinterest boards and possibly making purchases. It'll be interesting to see how brands utilize the site if they do at all.

I think Pinterest has a very good chance of becoming a top traffic driver because I hear about it mostly from people not in the tech world. My girlfriend and many of her friends use it as inspiration for clothing, arts & crafts, home decor, landscaping, etc. It's discovery versus search, and people can build trust there for delivering quality images/info just like on other social networks. Also, last time I checked the Pinterest links were follow links so marketers should/will definitely take advantage of that.

I think there is a lot of potential for Pinterest to be a viable eCommerce channel. Unlike Twitter & Facebook, it's easy to see how Pinterest can be a direct sales channel for retailers. Pinterest boards are the equivalent of wish lists for shoppers and it's already gained a ton of traction in women's accessories and apparel - http://pinterest.com/gianni039/shoes-are-girl-s-best-friend/.
