I think this article raises a fair point. A lot of us are still doing SEO (white hat) because there is still a lot of value in it. We simply diluted it and shifted focus from links to content and getting some traction to that content (resulting in links/mentions and other seo metrics).
The problem with the SEO denomination is that it's often associated with cheating search engines, buying links and spamming around. I guess that's why I try to differenciate myself and call my job inbound marketing even if SEO is a large part of it.
People outside of the SEO industry say "findability". There is no "black hat findability".
