commit: 6b2ca8a - #414 (2014-03-05 12:54:44 -0500)
I prefer a "super easy" way to deal with not provided. I simply do not have the time to spend hours playing with advanced analytics customizations. I just look up the "landing pages" in GA and can guess many of the keywords people arrived on them.
This is actually pretty super easy, though ultimately I wouldn't get much value from it. Being able to put a dollar amount to assisted conversions with (not provided) does... what?
For me, the answer is absolutely nothing.
Without any additional insight into the np terms, i don't know anything actionable.
Now, match this up to landing pages and we're talking - though you can do that without the approach in this post.
I completely agree here. Did the revamp of landing pages with NP and got 30% more leads. 1h work and you're there.
@ian if you can match the not provided keywords to landing pages you can actually see the corresponding landing pages in your 'keyword path' primary dimension of 'Top conversion path' report. Obviously you never thought of that and went straightaway to declare this post "useless". You also completely ignored the 'bonus insight' because you never actually read the full post.
...you're making a big assumption leap, there. You can make the (not provided) to landing page connection with one advanced segment and about 15 seconds of clicking. No need to bucket everything as this post lays out to do that one simple thing. Hence why I said "you can do that without the approach in this post".
The point of this post was getting the economic value of not provided, which tells you nothing. There's no takeaway there since you aren't going to actively be able to *do* anything with that knowledge. You can use it as an indicator for changes if (and only if) you tie that dollar figure to landing pages or assumed keywords based on behavior - but by itself it doesn't help.
Maybe this is a better question - knowing just the dollar figure you made from (not provided), what would you change about your SEO strategy or the tactics you're using?
For the bonus insight... "You can now also determine the assisted conversion values and last interaction conversion values of: organic branded keywords, organic non branded keywords, paid branded keywords and paid non branded keywords."
That has nothing to do with my statement of gaining no actionable path from knowing the dollars attached to (not provided).
Arg. Copy/paste apparently didn't work.
"...you're making a big assumption leap, there. You can make the (not provided) to landing page connection with one advanced segment and about 15 seconds of clicking. " It doesn't work that way in multi channel reports. Also the point of this post is not just getting the economic value of not provided keywords which you keep repeating again and again. If you can't get any useful insight from this post then it is your loss. Obviously your intentions are not good and i am not going to waste any time feeding the trolls. My discussion with you is over.
Calculating the Impact of Not Provided keywords on Organic Non-Branded Keywords
Calculating the Impact of Not Provided keywords on Direct Traffic
Calculating the Impact of Not Provided keywords on Organic Branded Keywords
Calculating the total economic value generated by ‘not provided’ keywordsYou're right. With sub-headings like that, how on earth would I leap to the conclusion that the post is about the value of (not provided) keywords?
...also. This: http://www.distilled.net/blog/web-analytics/google-analytics-multi-channel-funnel-tips-from-my-searchfest-presentation/ covered most of your post, except they did it nearly a year ago. Minus coming right out and saying "And then look at the assisted conversion report".
