Excellent interview. Thanks for making the transcript available John. I really liked their strategy on trying new things:
"We tried to use this 80/20 rule in marketing. So 80% of the time do what you think works and 20% of the time try out something new, do something you have not done."
Very smart approach.
Agreed, Rand. That really stuck out to me. I personally use the 70-20-10. 70% of stuff that you know will work, 20% that might work, and 10% that is extremely experimental and will most likely fail, but if it works it will bring outsized returns. I found it fascinating that once Buffer changed how they viewed content, their readership quadrupled. I know Leo was trying to understate it, but it proves the accuracy of what he was saying - don't go for your direct audience, but go for what will reach the 2nd and 3rd tier, because those people influence your direct audience. Fascinating stuff. I enjoyed every minute of that interview.
