starting a blog is not the point.. the real point is to get readers, build the blog and build a community around it!... I guess these points were very lame and unimportant to me when i was not having a blog... but today i am changed by 360 degrees! very true indeed.
On the "SEO ALL the posts", sure you could try and outrank dozens of established sites with your fresh pressed blog, or like Moosa says above you could focus on readership.
A few bloggers talk about "pillar content". The kind of content that really establishes you in your niche. Definitive, reference material. The type that will hit the "All Time" counter here on Inbound. Invest in that, and target that for your SEO... but then use your posts to follow up and engage with your audience.
In the same way you don't "SEO" your emails, don't necessarily "SEO" your blog posts. Both are trying to achieve the same thing.
