I don't think it's something new. Even before this patent the results would have been in a way randomized. Why? There are far too many factors involved to rank pages or images in the exact order you want. I did similar tests years ago and the results as far as I remember weren't 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 either but 2, 4, 1, 3, 5 or something instead.
