This post has some great points... but isn't really following its own advice. The black box on the left side of the site ("Like this! Share it!") is covering the sidebar... it's the kind of graphic that turns users off (at least me, anyway). I don't think that image is really worth its weight in gold, because most of the same controls appear twice on the page already: above the black box and on the bottom of the page. But, maybe since it's kissmetrics, they've measured the conversion rates in all three areas and decided it's best to have them all? http://imgur.com/a9Gmy
I think this is a case of them needing to check screen resolution before displaying that. On a 1080p screen that box seems well positioned, well out of the way of the main content but still there if you get the urge to share the article. In your screen though it is badly positioned. Also it does just replicate the buttons to the left side of the article, seems like it might be a widget that they offer though?
Once exception I have seen to this is on our blog preview screen. When we started adding featured images we noticed a significant increase in click-through .... if we picked an intriguing image. It wasn't enough to use cheesy clip art, but if we created a custom graphic or found a great photo, the posts with images got more interaction. We're doing a lot of testing =)
