commit: 6b2ca8a - #414 (2014-03-05 12:54:44 -0500)
Guest blogging is strategy I've by far had the most success with in terms of generating traffic, increasing authority and driving organic traffic to my site. For my most recent site, it's been the primary marketing medium I've used to take a brand-new blog from a PR 0 to a PR 4 in just 7 months. Upfront, it takes a lot of time but the results are incredibly worthwhile as evidenced by the data in the referenced guide.
This is awesome!! Although I'm not sure how I feel about being considered a 'stalker' but it has alot of great information and breaks down the process really well. Andrew I noticed you posted this and you wrote it, did you have anything else you wanted to add that you couldn't put in the article?
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it! And while 'Stalker' may have a bit of a negitive connotation, as marketers we ALL need to be good at doing some deep snooping on some level. ;-)In terms of additional tips, I think I covered most of the ones I really use. The secret to guest posting is there aren't really any secrets - it just takes time, building engagement with the author, helping them, and then writing quality content that they're proud to display on the blog. Thanks for the comment!
Yeah stalker does lol.. But I guess it will get the clicks? And you're right there isn't any trick to it, just be genuine and offer something they would be proud to show. Good summary!
I might be guilty of a "little" bit of headline indulgence. But, hey, you've got to convince people to click through! Otherwise all that work is for naught. Is full-blow Stalker too extreme? Maybe. But you do need to be a nosy neighbor. That just didn't make for nearly quite as good of a headline.....
lol yup! We're all guilty of it.. it works!
I totally agree with this. As head of PR at Shopify I'm in charge of garnering positive media attention for the company. Although I wouldn't say I full blow "stalk" tech /startup journalists, I do pay close attention to what they're doing on a day-to-day basis and make sure they know who I am.
The picture at the top of this article is perfect. It doesn't contribute to the negative connotation the word "stalker" has at all (wink wink).
Thanks Jacob - I found the picture on Shutterstock, it was only $10. I looked through literally hundreds of images (Shutterstock, istockphoto, Getty, and 123RF) and the one I ended up with couldn't have been better! So glad you enjoyed the picture, and the article that Andrew wrote.
It's almost wrong, isn't it? Yet oddly fascinating! Picking a lead picture for this post was really difficult - Mark (from Shopify) and I went through a lot of different options and finally settled on this one. You want to be a little creepy, but not so much that's it's just overly uncomfortable. And a engaging / interesting lead picture I think is effective in getting people to stick with the article for the first 2-3 sentences. Don't have any analytical proof of this, but appealing visual elements make me stick around a bit longer than bland, boring photos.
Not to sound like an 18th century British person but - Bravo! That was a great piece. It was interesting to see how you tracked this guy down and even though you made some initial mistakes he still approached you to write the article. You have inspired me to pursue some additional guest blogging oppurtunities.
Thanks Adam! Glad you enjoyed it. One great thing is that even if you do make a few slip-ups, you still can recover. I was really worried when I pitched Mark too early (as discussed in the article), but was able to over come the mistake by backing off and continuing to help instead of ask.Best of luck with your guest posting campaign!
Haha agreed, I couldn't believe how well thought out Andrew's plan was. After I saw the quality of articles that Andrew was writing, it was a no-brainer to offer him a chance to write a guest blog for Shopify.
Sooo.. I retweeted word for word what Andrew tweeted to Mark.. and it led to me getting a guest post on shopify! NO JOKE!! This process works lol!Seriously though, I did get a guest post from it and I did retweet word for word what Andrew tweeted. However its more than that, I have value to offer and I just got lucky.
