Very good point. Accepting a unique Google ID for them to track you is good for them but not necessarily for you. There are many potential issues with the authorship markup. For instance what happens when you're not active on Google+ and jsut the display your image in SERPs. Do you get downgraded?
Good question, Tad. And of course, we just don't know. How much will Google+ activity affect your Author Rank? Can you build an authoritative Author profile without building an authoritative Google+ network? We don't know, but I'm working from the assumption that having a powerful G+ network will be a boost to my Authorship authority. That's just an assumption, but since G+ is Google's and is the home base for Authorship, I think it's a reasonable one.
