Not enough people advocating this type of testing and freethinking. The whole industry tends to just roll with whatever the "right" people are saying. Dangerous.
I've tested this. Authorship snippets with pictures do indeed increase CTR. No, I didn't test it in every single type of SERP but the results in SERPs with no special elements (weather, local, image) were dramatic.
Can we be absolutely sure that the CTR boost many are seeing who have the author rich snippet is attributable to it? No. But if it walks like a duck, talks like a duck....in other words, at some point you have enough correlation to say "screw the proof, I'm implementing this for myself and all my clients."
