commit: 6b2ca8a - #414 (2014-03-05 12:54:44 -0500)
I posted about this before we migrated to the revised design and backend: http://www.inbound.org/discussion/view/why-we-re-redesigning-inbound-org
Can't believe I missed this before, sorry. Even in the last half hour that I've been playing with it I've liked it more. Probably just me on my grumpy old man ish on a Monday morning. Thanks for answering!
I missed it too. The day has only 24h.
the titles arent showing on mobile, so i dont know what the articles are. also, this text box is doing some crazy stuff and not allowing me to use swype on android. (took me ages to write this comment)
Sounds odd - can you take a screenshot?
The mobile interface has been hard. Probably one of the hardest bits to get right. Native mobile apps might be pipelined just for the better UI - something that came up in the other thread too.
Titles are showing for me and I was able to use swype to write this comment without issue. Are you using Chrome for android? What version of android?
It's horrible. Why oh why do people have to redesign stuff?
I really enjoy wasting my time learning how to use a new site design.
What about it seems so "horrible" to you specifically? Usually people redesign sites to improve the functionality, navigation, and usability. So far I've been able to navigate the site much faster with the new UI, which will hopefully make up your "wasted time."
The left nav is a total waste of space. It takes up so much room the title of the each entry is cut off. This is a bad copy of reddit. The thing with reddit is that is focuses on the content, e.g. title of each entry is as long as it needs to be. Whereas here, its cut off, e.g. on an ipad this is one title "
Usability studies have shown that the left is the best place for a menu, otherwise it gets overlooked.
There is only 4 links a logo and search, in all that space, total waste.
Much like the previous iteration, but this time with including search!
(Heads up, more stuff is coming on this left-hand sitewide nav...)
There's more room to be eaked out of the left and right panels, especially on the iPad version. Something we will be tweaking a little bit
When are you going to give more space to the content? The site is so annoying to use on an iPad, the titles are too short, most of them don't make any sense because they are cut off. The left nav is too wide, and there is loads of white space on the right because of the three icons in the top right. Why not either bring back the top nav or move the icons to the left nav?
I like the new design, is there a way to have the dropdown back to select the topic I'm looking at? Please!
Mary, you can achieve this through the search bar. It has auto-complete so if you're just looking for something like SEO, type 's', select SEO from the resulting dropdown, and it will return the articles for that category.
We're in the process of replacing the categories with tags. It's awkward having to find just one category to fit a submission in (even if it belongs to multiple, or none at all). With tags, we can mark up submissions with multiple different tags which will let us do far more intelligent things to find and sort specific articles.
Adding sensible navigation between tags is also in the pipeline. For now though, it's just search.
Finding it difficult to get used to a site without a header, strange one really
I have to say Ed I think it's really good work. The sidebar works really well, I've generally enjoyed the experience more than I did previously and highlighting the live stuff in the sidebar really draws my eyes to it. Change is necessary sometimes and if it gives a better experience ... why not!?Must be very frustrating to be working hard to improve the experience for everyone on what is a free resource and you're being met with some of the criticism here.
Still ... "Haters gonna hate"
It's so good it makes my brain hurt. Wish this site was around in 2008 when I started learning SEO.
Cheers, Ed and team...
Love the new redesign. Great work, guys.
:( I Am not happy with new design. Why you guys are redesign like this. Now it looks like all the functions and other stuff is places in one page. Also its very difficult to navigate all the areas of Inbound. It big UPVOTE button was most love part for me, now I am searching for the same in that crowd.
Devalues the karma button.
Adds more weight to the discussion feature.
Two massive ticks in my eyes.
Agreed :) Much better!
Great to see comments and debate strengthened. It's diificult to find the not yet popular posts now though.
I quite like it :-)
So far, I have to be honest, I don't like it one bit. I'm all for change where it is beneficial but so far all I have done is stumbled around. Not sure what value the new design adds. Nonetheless, we'll all get used to it soon enough!
I like the new design.Good overall readability of main text.I'm not a fan of white text on black background though. It reduces readability.BTW good job!
Whoops! thought it was a dark grey - we'll get that fixed.
I like the font, good choice although possibly a little small?
I miss seeing how many upvotes a comment has got, could we get this back?
I think the homepage looks really slick, good work.
I like the 'discussing' bit. I predict an increase in comments per post.
I'm not sure about the upvote button, it looks a bit too small.
I also wonder about having the submission person's image as the first thing you see. This will make people biased to certain people and might get in the way of a legitimately good post that was submitted by a 'no-one'.
Number of upvote comments is coming back :)
The upvote button was scaled down to make more room. As Tom says ^^ it's a focus more on highlighting discussion more compared with upvotes.
So far as bias towards clicking on "someone's" vs "no one's" submission, maybe there's a case there to compare CTRs on submissions by "famous" people in the industry. Rand's yellow profile vs. a new member's default twitter egg? Maybe there's a case to grey out people's profiles unless the div is hovered over or something like that...? Need's analysis and thought I think.
Cool. I get the point of highlighting the discussion over the number of upvotes but I'm getting old and my eyes aren't what they once were :)
I'm not even sure if a 'bias' would be a problem I just think that it would be a shame if the submitter became bigger than the content?
I'd be really interested to see what the CTR's were like if you just had the article title, number of comments & it's number of upvotes. No submitter data.
To be honest, I also didn't liked the *new design*. It seems some work is still going on. I mentioned Ed on twitter that I can't see my profile & every time I click on notification the page is getting crashed but it seems he is too busy to reply. I thought you will change some little component. I still feel the earlier one was good.
That was all fixed up?
Great new design! I takes a bit of time to get used it (as always) but is much more clean and easy to get to the main stuff.
My biggest objection is the right sidebar with social buttons/repeated influencer stats. Mobile/tablet views discard this and the site looks more composed. Might be better to integrate the views/comments into the topic header and the social crap to the end of the topic?
Good call. There's more work we can do on the discussion pages - we've time set aside in a couple of weeks to give these threads some real love.
Glad I could lend my professional opinion :).
Love the new design... but lil bit confusing. I'd suggest to replace the left sidebar to sticky menu.
I miss notifications of comment replies and upvotes. Where are they now? Are they gone?
Was the previous design also responsive?
I too am resistant to change, and usually hate redesigns but I really like this layout. I looks better, it's more modern, easier to use and just feels better. Gotta give a big thumbs up for this one.
Oh yes - and it's still suck when you submit content, someone else submits it 2 hours later, and theirs gets all the votes. Gotta be a way around that.
Is it just me or is this 'new design' 100% identical to what the www.serpiq.com folks have?Looks the same....
I'd have to agree - lots of similarity and the color scheme is very similar to our tool. If it was inspired by our dashboard at serpIQ, then that's quite the compliment!
P.S. Obviously loving the new design :p
Hehe - hadn't noticed that!
Does look similar, especially colour scheme and layout on the left. I don't use their service so I haven't seen there dashboard. Looking at their product screenshots on their homepage..
Wow, how can you claim to improve usability when I can't even read the complete HEADLINES?! I truly cannot fathom the design decision that went into this.
"Let's get more space by clipping headline, no one obviously reads those, they just come to this website to look at influential members and pretty pictures".
Finally getting used to it!
