Hey Sean, this is post is both amusing and inspirational. It's given me a few ideas in terms of how to manage clients and how to use social media successfully. Thanks for adding it to your site.
No problem Sean, anytime.
This. Is. HILARIOUS!!! And sadly an all-too-true picture of how I imagine many people actually do their jobs. Glad to see the SEO is getting a little does of comedy lately and that we can poke fun at ourselves.
Spot-on, Joel. Thanks for pointing me toward this. Comedy and satire are useful tools for reinventing our industry!
The thing to remember is that you don't just get to that level straight away. You need experience and great contacts within the industry to get that good.
Yes, I wish it was a little less true. Especially this one: "I read Hacker News for a while and pretend that I know what people are writing about. I open a few articles in separate tabs, scan them for a minute or two before closing them. Sometimes I tweet about articles that I semi understand, I feel smart, I’m passing on value to the community and I’m educating people. They really are fortunate to follow me."
Sometimes I don't even bother to tweet articles I fully understand as if I understand then my followers won't think I'm smart
I'm going to tweet this then go back to writing great content.
That's called relationship building. You just worked REALLY hard, you should probably take a break for awhile. Treat yourself to a Diet Dr. Pepper. I mean, it's the weekend.
"I'm going to tweet this then go back to writing great content." Now you're beginning to get it. Tweet, content, tweet, content (*note to self* create an SEO aerobics video, it's (in)bound to go viral!)
I hope there are some more installments from our inbound marketers diary in the weeks to come
Absolutely - this is a good theme. Sean should really stretch it out, tons of mileage in this one. Plus I think that's called like... 'retaining your audience' or something. I think I read once somewhere that posting multiple blog posts in a series is a good way to make people keep coming back because they are addicted to great content like cocaine.
"because they are addicted to great content like cocaine." I actually lolled at that, congrats :D
This is a strategy? I need to write that in my moleskin
Yeah I read about it yesterday somewhere...
So do I Chris. Since his diary post has gone VIRAL he has since decided to get an agent. This agent has told me that he will be willing to write again at some point but only for a fee. Lets see whether we as a community can pay for it...
I get my Adsense cheque next week I'm sure that'll cover it
I hope so. I really do.
+1 Seriously need to keep this going. I would love to see an entry from SMX or SES :D
"I come back to my desk to find I’ve lost a follower. Why does this shit always happen to me?" Haha.
Hey now, there's nothing funny about that. I think we've all experienced the heart-wrenching pain of losing someone on our carefully cultivated followers list. It's like being broken up with, only much quieter. I put my fist through my last laptop screen after losing 5 followers. The heartache was just too much to bear.
Too true Joel, too true :-( Oh, you still got my laptop?
Everyone knows you're only successful after you're controversial and make people mad with your clearly superior opinions. It helps if you make your blog post headlines really radical. The more times you use the words "insane" and "amazing" the more famous you are. You WILL lose some followers in the process. But that just means that your current followers love you even harder!
That's insane & amazing
I bet I just lost some followers right now. AW YEAH.
It's a risky strategy Ryan. I find that being nice and ass kissing works well. I might try your insane technique at some point in the future though. What do you think of "7 Insane Ways to Pimp Out Your XML Sitemap!" ?? I used a number like 7 because it's a bit wacky and eye catching!
Obviously I hate it because I didn't see the magic number 5 anywhere in your comment. It's like you didn't even consider it.
"But, but, Matt Cutts said it doesn't work!" - 3,219th SEO to say this in response to link spamming. Anyways, loving the satire from Joel & Sean. This industry's gone long enough without some good humor.
Satire makes this work bearable, to be honest - because as the Comedian says in the Watchmen, "It's all a big joke". It really is, and we need more people who are adept at poking fun at it. Humor, like sex, sells - and I think the best part about it is that we can prove "Creating great content" doesn't necessarily mean producing the next technical wonderlist or building out some sort of incredible tool (though those are both wonderful things to do). Sometimes, it just means - GASP - having an opinion worth sharing.
Don't drink the kool-aid
As I said in the comments on the diary, I could tell immediately this was fake. I mean, the guy doesn't search for mentions of himself until 9 a.m.?? By that time I've already downed a pint of whiskey because I didn't find any.
I'm late to the #OccupyInbound party! Man this post was a blast, just long enough to read over during my morning coffee and enough laughs to put me in a great mood for the day. Encore!
Yea ! Google trend is a good excuse :)
