Wonder if Author markup is more effective than other rich snippet data? Stars for reviews are pretty effective too...
Hmmmm... I'm not much of a statistics geek, but it seems like the sample size here may be too small to be significant. While it's a great achievement -- and cheers at all the work to measure the results of implementing rel=author -- I'm not sure that the 38% increase in CTR will transfer at scale.
I tend to agree at that volume of traffic you might see a 30% increase in CTR by changing or just it was sunny outside still a positive increase is a result
You are completely right Jonathon. There were some factors playing in my favor to achieve this: 1. There is no other rich snippet competition on this page of SERPs 2. The keyword being searched has a visual audience who are looking specifically for images. 3. The search audience is apt to go 3, 4 or even 5 pages deep to find what they are looking for. So yes this may be an extreme example and every industry must asses their own website to see if rel=author is appropriate.
Thanks for recognizing some of the limitations and potential biases. Very helpful.
Well said, Russell. I truly respect the work, the post, and your detail in analyzing the outcomes.
Kind of sleazy that Google makes you link this all to Google+. They should just parse your thumbnail and preferred profile page from the page metadata.
Agreed, Google is like a giant Multi Level Marketing link scheme; Google on top, of course.
Yes, it sometimes feel like we have to do all the marketing for Google+...
I think Google has always depended on us marketers for their marketing. I still find myself educating advertisers on all the cool features/benefits in Adwords. I heard once that GWO only has a 20% adoption rate by Adwords advertisers...mainly because Google failed at marketing it correctly when it hit the market...doh!
And based on this post, I have finally added this to my blog. Thanks for sharing.
+1 on this Ross. The final nudge ;)
Glad I could be an influence. I am interested to see what your results are. Keep me posted!
Facebook didn't go big because Zuckerbuerg made some revolutionary technology. He just gave it to the right people at the right time.
Adding your author tag make sense as it increases the credibility of the result and images are always catchy
