It's really hard to understand whether this is a good or bad argument, because posting a bunch of slides doesn't provide enough information. The opening slide about the "old" despite looking at them, don't really give me a sense of what the "old" SEO is supposed to be. Plus, what I think you think is the "new" SEO was already being done by some SEOs before. Separately from all that, saying that Inbound Marketing is the new SEO just makes no sense. It's like saying Inbound Marketing is the new email, or the new social sharing. Inbound Marketing, as it has been redefined as a term in recent years, means "online earned media," IE -- traffic from free sources on the web. SEO is one of those sources. It's a part of Inbound Marketing. So you can't say SEO is the new Inbound Marketing. It's like saying the finger is the new hand. A finger is part of your hand.
Well, inbound marketing has been thriving for at least 5 years so it's not new. Also SEO has always been part of it. Now saying that SEO + social media + content marketing is better than just SEO isn't big news. It's simple math. Apart of that I can fully agree, don't just do technical SEO while neglecting content and social media.
Danny: While your take is appreciated (and ALWAYS respected) you have to consider the audience for the slides I put together. Professionally, 99% of the prospects/clients I come across know of SEO as just technical. You are indeed correct that slides always need context. Unfortunately, that's hard to do. The bottom line is the presentation tells the story that "earned media" (inbound marketing) is necessary to do your best in search. While people like you and I have known this for years, most are foreign to the concept. The title is merely to drive home the point that it's really "earned media" that is required in most cases rather than technical SEO. Tad Chef: Thanks for dropping your take. I agree that this isn't big news to folks like you, Danny or myself, but unfortunately almost every prospect I come across doesn't get this. Perhaps as a community we haven't done the best job at communicating this five year old fact. Good content marketing educates and/or entertains. As long as people continue to show up at my door with 10 year old notions of SEO it my job (duty) to create what to you and many in our biz would be considered "duh" content. I believe if we all did more of this potential prospects will start further down the funnel and have more of an appreciation as to the cost of what we do. On a side note - I have to thank Rand and Dharmesh for this awesome community. It's not everyday Danny Sullivan and Tad Chef leave comments on my content. Thanks guys. . . @CPollittIU
