All right Rand, spill the beans, what's going on that's so top secret at Moz.com? Do you need beta testers? :)

  • Martijn Oud   Feb 16 2012   Flag

Both Moz.com and Moz.org show the exact same page btw. I'm curious to see what they'll plan to do with the domains. I can't really imagine them dropping the SEO title, but we'll see. PS: A better category would be 'Industry News'.

  • Paul Gailey   Feb 16 2012   Flag

I agree on the categorisation martijn - that was my bad that I was unable to edit after submission. Moderator? - pls. fix?

  • Rand Fishkin   Feb 16 2012   Flag

Fixed! Although, really, I should put this in the "wild speculation" category :-)

  • Paul Gailey   Feb 16 2012   Flag

    cool :)

    Smart move.

  • David Cohen   Feb 16 2012   Flag

From a marketing perspective, I think it's a very smart move on their part. I believe SEOMoz has evolved into much more than just the technical and functional aspects of SEO. I see they have gone deeper than this, moving very much into the whole inbound marketing model. I'm very excited for Rand and the whole Moz team.

  • Bill Hartzer   Feb 16 2012   Flag

@rand, if this is classified as "news" or "industry news" then it quite possibly could be construed as being true. If the rebrand is truly "wild speculation", then how about classifying it in another category, such as "Foo".

  • Joel K   Feb 16 2012   Flag

Surprised they didn't go with "InboundMoz". Thank God for that.

  • Danny Sullivan   Feb 16 2012   Flag

I'd hardly say it's wild speculation. I mean, look at the bottom of each Inbound page. "Rand from Moz." Rand's too smart of a marketer to just say something like that, sorry. Add to it owning the Moz.org and Moz.com domains, the change to "top secret" on those domains, the addition of social tracking to what was once a purely SEO tools suite. Add to that further that Rand more and more talks about "inbound marketing" rather than SEO. It all makes it pretty clear that SEOmoz will get rebranded or gain an additional brand that allows the company to encompass more than just SEO. That's a smart move. Going the "Inbound Marketing" route allows Moz to potentially attract a broader audience, investors that are happy with an expansion into social beyond SEO.

Will that hurt rankings for "SEO" since it's no longer in the domain name? SEOmoz's beginners guide to SEO ranks 5th on google when I search for the term.

  • Joel K   Feb 16 2012   Flag

Given the absurd amount of back links the site has, I'm going to go ahead and guess "probably not". Nor would it even matter at this point. I strongly doubt SEOMoz is converting much on a generic keyword phrase like "SEO". Vanity? Nice to have? Sure. Will it affect their business one iota now? Tougher to say, but I'll still say it: No.

  • Alan Bleiweiss   Feb 16 2012   Flag

SEOMozcation Roger SEOMozbot SEOMozzers YouSEOMoz yeah - all along the company's been poised to change the brand. Personally I'd have preferred they go with AlanMoz.com but hey, that's just my opinion.

I didn't say that SEOmoz would necessarily get changed. It might. But instead, as I explained, it might also gain a new umbrella brand, Moz. The company does more than SEO. Rand has been speaking on far more than SEO. To act like there's no reason they'd consider either changing the brand or expanding out into a new one is just dumb, especially when they have the Moz domains up and running separately. There's nothing negative about this. It makes plenty of sense.

As a Brand its good Sign...

  • Patrick Hathaway   Feb 17 2012   Flag

I'd have to agree with Danny that is does seem pretty apparent they are rebranding. Think of all the links they'll get to their new domain from the SEO community speculation. I for one am going to start calling them Moz in preparation.

I was trying to figure out where you got that from... Until the light went on and "Viewed Source." Cute and funny.

i think its a good idea. allows them to cover more in the always evolving online marketing field

Will hopefully be a good opportunity for "Moz" to publish a case study later: How to Successfully Rebrand Your Company =)

And, "how to migrate a site without losing link and ranking value". Not as simple as mere 301's...or is it?
