Hey Danny, at least don't link out to them!

I think Danny took a pile of unfair flak today if you read that SEObook thread. "Internet Marketers" just like "journalists" heck even "politicians" will always get illogically and unfairly clumped together.

My issue is with the 1000s of people who, having never heard about internet marketing before, will leave that article thinking that's how things are. That's because it classified all of internet marketing into schemes like this (Danny pointed this out as well). Because The Verge's take on things will always be more read than SELand's, they're getting away with this negative linkbait without being put back in their place. Also - people in comments are commending this article. Definitely not helping that no one (or only a few) with any knowledge of internet marketing is present in those comments.

"leave that artice thinking that's how things are".. it would be cool if we collectively did something to change that perception, wouldn't it?...

Your 3 periods at the end make me eager to hear what that "something" you had in mind might be.

I've thought if we all 'pitched in' to devote time aiding a few or a niche of charities/non-profits at a time (each month), it would be an expression of our artistry (we can IMPROVE the Web through our knowledge) and a rebuttal to the negative associations which come along with being involved in 'scams.' That's something I've thought of before; but, I'd love to hear the suggestions of others...

There has been lots of non-profit and charity SEO going on for years. I don't believe this can help much to appear in a better light. It's great for the people we help of course. Likewise green internet marketing for example has been around for years. I think we need publications for the masses that explain what internet marketing and especially SEO is about. Most blogs publish intermediate and advanced stuff. Even SEOmoz has just a few resources for those who don't know yet.
