I really like this post. It's pretty spot on, highlighting things some lazy SEOs do.
Thanks Bill! You may or may not be able to tell that while the angle I took is on the offensive, some of these things are things I know my agency has been guilty of in the past. We are constantly trying to improve our processes and that often means some really ugly, uncomfortable looks in the mirror. I can't tell you how many times we've revamped reporting to make it more meaningful and actionable, and I feel like more SEO's need to be doing the same thing!

When you stop looking to improve you get stagnant and you'll be the one starting to lose clients to competitors. 2 - It's good to hear someone admit that things aren't perfect yet but that you know you are going in the right direction. So many people write as if every campaign they do is genius, never have problems and their best buds with every client. I know that most of the time they are writing on their business blogs so being honest and transparent isn't a great idea but come on people, lets stop the blagging just for a bit eh?!

Thanks Anthony! I try to mix it up a bit when I write. I'm no technical wizard, don't really have anything revolutionary when it comes to link building or site structure... but I do have opinions, so I milk them for all they're worth.
Good read, it wasn't as confrontational as I expected, but in a good way. It's easy to forget about the relationship building process in an industry that usually forces you to camp out a desk at times.
Well said, James. I think what's easy to forget is that no matter what business you're in, your communication skills will always be crucial to develop.
Glad to see this post getting some love, often when we take on new clients that have left other providers one of their biggest issues is that they don't get to talk to the people who they are working with. Like Joel points out communication is key and its easy to forget that our clients don't live and breathe search...
