Why would you use the compeition stat in the google keyword tool as a guide to SERPs competition? That statistic is telling you whether you'll pay top dollar for each click or not, nothing to do with organic search engine ranking competition.

Hey Mark - I just like to use it as a relative measure of difficulty. I have also found that it does provide a quick and dirty indicator as to the effectiveness of the keywords, i.e. keywords that are more competitive, and thus more expensive, are being bid up because they are converting. Also, this approach is more focused on beginners wrapping their head around structuring pages to target the right phrases, and does not get into the nitty gritty on what it takes to rank well for those terms. Cheers!

In the example you posted it provides the core basis of your keyword choice. I rarely see any correlation between that stat and natural serps competition unless you're talking about massively competitive short keywords. Teaching beginners to use it as any sort of indicator for organic SERPs is teaching them to use bad information to make important decisions.

Well actually the keyword choice was selected before the analysis started - based on a suggestion from a friend. The keyword tool run was essentially to find related terms with high volume. Then the permutations I created and recommended for header tags were based on pulling as many keywords in without sounding awkward or forced. I would also go as far as to say 'coworking' fits the bill as very competitive (don't know if I would use the word massive, as I would reserve that for credit cards, payday loans, etc.) and short. I also think you're missing the point of the post a bit, which was a beginner's approach to optimizing the content on a page, hence it not being title 'How to Rank Any Page for Your Target Keywords.' I understand the close correlation between the concepts but I chose my words carefully.
