I'm probably being naiive here, but I really dislike the part of this process that involves asking for a link. If you have to ask then it's presumably not been offered of the recipient's own volition. Why not help the guy out for the sake of helping him? Let him decide for himself if he wants to offer you a link without prompting. No matter how you word your message it's going to sound to him like "I just helped you. You owe me. Build a link to my site.". Why would you want to send that message to anybody?
Iain, most people won't link to you unless you suggest it to them.
