Good post, John! The same thing happened to me once. I hate when other people send me emails when I haven't opted in - but I guess I thought I was different because my content was *so good*. But I wasn't different at all. (I think its safer for me to write the comment here than on your blog ;)
Once again leading the pack with transparency. Thanks for the insight John, this had been on my mind recently (wondering about what is okay and what's not).
Email laws are serious business. Definitely a good bit of research needed before you dive in.
Right. My scariest email marketing moment ever was getting a call from our domain provider threatening to shut down our domain because somebody complained to them directly about email spam.
For those unaware, many countries include SMS in their spam act as well or have special regulations around it. If you were thinking about sending your past clients an SMS, when they haven't specifically opted into that - you'd be well served to check the relevant regulations before you gress "go", it could save you a lot of pain in the future.
Kudos to John for being transparent here and showing how to handle these types of issues. Email is a tricky beast and that inbox is still a very ... private thing for folks. So it's bound to stir emotions when you do this type of outreach.
