Some good points raised here, I used to disregard social, but more and more I'm coming to accept it as a necessary component of any well rounded SEO strategy.
IMO, Social signals are becoming more and more important in SE algos and indicators for SERP placements.
Then write a post that demonstrates it with some substance to it. I've been doing that for a year, not goofing off creating fake hostless hangouts.
I think Hangouts has a lot of potential, but Google's new design aesthetic isn't particularly warm.
I flagged this post. There are TONs of insightful posts about effectively using Google+ on Inbound that never get a second vote, and this bit of fluff gets 7 votes and on the front page? I suspect someone invited their friends to vote. The post has no substance to it. The guy created a Hangout called "LOL internet" pointed his web cam at a wall with a music playlist running, and then leaves for two hours and laughs about all the views he got. How does this qualify for the front page of Inbound???
I think once you've reached as many comments as everyone else put together you've devoted a little bit too much time to this post.
Mark, I'm sorry you feel my article has no substance. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. ;) I think outside the box and do things my own way and bring a new twist to social signals and SEO. While yes, anyone can join a Hangout and idle, I analyzed the results and outcome for others to see. Take care!
Wait I just read further. THIS GUY IS PROMOTING THE CREATION OF FAKE GOOGLE+ ACCOUNTS in violation of Google's TOS. This post should be taken down immediately.
Mark, how is this any different than the follower game you play on Twitter? Sure, it might not be explicitly against the TOS, but it's certainly very low grade social marketing. Less white knighting please. It's articles like these that expose problems and find new techniques to make use of these tools. Not the same old, "follow me, follow you" nonsense that passes for "social media marketing."
It's no different, and I don't "play the follower game on Twitter." I'll gladly wear my white knight suit; thanks for conveying it to me ;-)
I agree with Mark on this. That and the fact G+ hangouts crash on me constantly. Love the idea, but it's still in beta.
